Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Ventura, CA | Alcott Chimney Ventura
A Ventura Chimney Sweep for Gelco systems typically runs $189 – $329, and Alcott Chimney Ventura provides independent Gelco service across the city, from downtown to the Eastside and up into the hills. We’re not factory-affiliated, and we don’t pretend to be. What we are is a crew that works on Gelco liners, caps, and flue systems every week in Ventura’s salt air, which means we know exactly how coastal moisture changes the way these components age. Call (559) 282-2695 for a written quote before any work starts.

Ruben Castellano and our technicians have spent years pulling creosote out of Gelco stainless liners and replacing corroded Gelco caps on homes throughout Ventura. If you’ve got a Gelco system and you’re wondering what that creosote smell actually means, we’ll tell you straight. Gelco sales & service is a core part of what we do, and in this coastal climate, the details matter more than they do inland.
Why Ventura Residents Choose Us for Gelco Service
Most chimney companies can sweep a flue. Fewer can look at a Gelco stainless liner with twenty years of marine-layer exposure and tell you whether it’s still solid or quietly failing at the seams. Ruben grew up in Los Angeles, picked up his trade fundamentals at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and has spent the better part of two decades getting into the details of flues, fireboxes, and everything that connects them. He and our crew have served Ventura homeowners for years, including plenty of calls out to the historic Eastside near the San Buenaventura Mission where older chimneys have their own particular stories to tell.
We carry genuine Gelco parts when local supply houses have them. When they don’t, we use high-grade stainless aftermarket components that match Gelco dimensions exactly. Every job comes with a written price before we touch anything, a written guarantee on every repair, and a free return visit if that repair fails. Those aren’t upsells. They’re how we work.
You’ll know your technician’s name and see their photo before we arrive. Every tech is background-checked and identity-verified through the Threshold Standard, and they’ll show a photo ID badge at the door. That’s not optional at Alcott Chimney Ventura.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Ventura
- Corroded Gelco cap mounting brackets. Salt-laden marine air eats at the mounting hardware on Gelco caps faster than anything we see inland. Caps loosen, rattle in coastal winds, and eventually lean, letting rain drip into the flue. We see this constantly on homes within a mile or two of the water in Ventura.
- Sticky creosote in Gelco stainless liners. When fires are burned infrequently in damp, cool conditions, creosote doesn’t dry into a flaky powder. It stays tacky and clings to the liner walls. Ventura’s marine layer sets up exactly these conditions, and sticky creosote is harder to remove and more likely to ignite than the dry stuff.
- Spalling Gelco clay tile liners. Cycles of salt moisture absorption and drying cause the surface of clay tile liners to flake off in thin layers. In older Ventura chimneys, especially those built before the 1960s, this spalling can progress to the point where liner pieces drop into the flue and block draft.
- Seized damper hinges on Gelco installations. Rust and salt buildup on damper hardware is a Ventura specialty. Hinges seize, the damper won’t open or close smoothly, and you end up with smoke backing into the living room or cold air dropping down the chimney.
- Water intrusion through chimney crowns on older Ventura homes. The combination of maritime moisture and aging masonry means chimney crowns crack and let water in. On Gelco-equipped chimneys, that water often finds its way down the outside of the liner and into the firebox. We address this with breathable waterproofing treatments, not surface sealers that trap moisture.
Gelco Service in Ventura: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s something you won’t read on a generic chimney page. In Ventura’s Midtown and downtown areas, many Gelco-lined chimneys sit on 1920s to 1940s Craftsman and Spanish-style homes where the original clay tile flues were later retrofit with Gelco liners. After our coastal rainy season, we regularly find spalled mortar around the liner joints from salt-laden moisture that has wicked into the masonry. This is a condition you rarely see in Oxnard or Camarillo’s newer construction. Those older Ventura chimneys absorb moisture through their exterior brick, and that moisture carries salt deep into the masonry. When it dries, the salt crystallizes and expands, slowly breaking down mortar and tile surfaces from the inside. For Gelco owners, this means a chimney that looks fine from the outside can be deteriorating around the liner joints where you can’t see it. That’s why we always check liner joint integrity during a cleaning, not just creosote levels. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
Gelco Models & Products We Service in Ventura
Our Ventura techs work on the full Gelco lineup: Gelco Stainless Steel Chimney Liners, Gelco Clay Tile Flue Liners, Gelco Heavy-Duty Chimney Caps, and Gelco Galvanized Multi-Flue Caps. We carry standard Gelco cap sizes and stainless liner components in our local stock, which means faster turnaround on common replacements here in Ventura. When a part is obsolete or a liner is heavily corroded along more than a third of its length, we don’t patch it and hope for the best. We recommend replacement with high-grade stainless that matches Gelco dimensions. The goal is a flue that functions correctly, not one that’s been cosmetically touched up.

FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Ventura
It’s real. Salt-laden marine air accelerates rust on galvanized and even stainless cap mounting hardware, especially within two miles of the coast. We replace more corroded Gelco cap brackets in Ventura than anywhere else we work. If your cap is leaning or rattling in the wind, it’s worth a look. Call (559) 282-2695 and we’ll assess it.
In most cases, yes. We use rotary brush systems sized to the liner diameter and can typically clean through the insert opening or the cleanout without pulling the unit. If access is blocked, we’ll tell you what’s needed and quote it before starting. Your estimate is free.
Most Ventura homeowners do fine with a sweep every two years if they burn seasoned wood and the chimney is in good shape. But if you burn through the damp winter months or your fires are intermittent, sticky creosote can build faster than expected in our humid marine air. Homes within a mile of the water should plan on an annual inspection regardless. Call (559) 282-2695 and we’ll give you a straight answer based on what your flue actually shows.
If spalling is confined to a small section and the surrounding tile is sound, we can often resurface with HeatShield, a product we install and stand behind. If the spalling runs long sections or the tile has shifted, a stainless liner replacement is the honest recommendation. We’ll show you photos either way before you spend a dollar.
Many older Gelco caps meet basic size requirements but don’t provide the spark-arrestor mesh now expected in fire-prone areas of Ventura County. If your cap lacks proper mesh or is corroded, we’ll quote a replacement that fits your flue and meets current code. Call (559) 282-2695 for a free assessment.
