Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Inspection in Ventura: What to Know First
HeatShield chimney inspection in Ventura typically costs $189 – $450 depending on whether you need a standard Level 1 check or a deeper Level 2 camera inspection, and most jobs are completed the same week you call. Alcott Chimney Ventura is an independent HeatShield service provider, which means we inspect and repair HeatShield systems without being tied to manufacturer pricing or replacement-only recommendations. If you own a HeatShield-lined chimney or are considering one, this page covers what actually fails, what it costs to fix, and how we inspect it. Call (559) 282-2695 for a free estimate.

We wrote this for Ventura homeowners who have HeatShield resurfacing in their flue and want an honest read on whether it’s still doing its job. Ruben Castellano and our crew have inspected hundreds of HeatShield installations across Ventura, including a lot of older chimneys in the Eastside neighborhoods near the San Buenaventura Mission where salt air and decades of use take a toll.
Key Takeaways
- HeatShield is a cerfractory flue sealant, not a structural liner. It restores the interior surface of a damaged flue but does not replace the masonry around it.
- A camera inspection is the only way to verify HeatShield is still bonded correctly. Visual checks from the roofline miss most failures.
- Ventura’s coastal moisture accelerates spalling in older chimneys, which puts extra stress on HeatShield’s bond to the flue wall.
- OEM HeatShield material is not sold to the public. Any contractor offering “genuine HeatShield” should be able to show you the product before application.
- Every HeatShield inspection we do includes a written report with photos, a written price for any repair, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
HeatShield is a good product when installed correctly, but it has failure modes that owners need to understand. Here are the five we see most often in Ventura chimneys, along with what we do about each.
- Bond separation at the flue wall (most common in the Eco-Sweep and Jr. systems). HeatShield is troweled or sprayed onto the existing flue surface, then compressed with a foam plug. If the original flue wasn’t cleaned thoroughly before application, or if moisture was present, the material eventually separates from the masonry. You’ll notice fine ceramic grit falling into the firebox or a hollow sound when tapping the flue. Our fix: camera inspection to map the separation, then spot repair with HeatShield’s patching compound or full reapplication if the delamination covers more than 30% of the flue surface.
- Moisture intrusion through the crown causing HeatShield to spall. In Ventura, we get a lot of wind-driven rain off the Pacific. If your chimney crown has hairline cracks, water seeps into the masonry and freezes, or just sits against the HeatShield layer. The resurfacing material eventually flakes off in pieces, especially at the top 18 inches of the flue. Our fix: repair the crown first, then reseal the flue. We don’t patch HeatShield without fixing the water source because it will fail again within a year. We guarantee that repair in writing.
- Improper original coverage at flue tile offsets. Older Ventura chimneys, especially the ones built before 1960, often have offset flue tiles that create ledges inside the flue. HeatShield applied too thinly at these ledges leaves gaps where creosote, the tar-like buildup that causes chimney fires, accumulates and burns. Our fix: camera inspection to locate each offset, then a targeted application of HeatShield’s sealant at those specific areas. This is a spot repair, not a full reapplication, and we price it accordingly.
- Chemical degradation from previous creosote treatments. Some homeowners use creosote-removal powders or sprays before calling us. Many of these products are acidic. If a previous sweep company treated the flue aggressively, the HeatShield surface can pit and lose its smooth finish. The flue still functions, but it becomes harder to clean and more prone to creosote buildup. Our fix: neutral-sweep cleaning first, then resurfacing with a compatible HeatShield product. We never use chemical treatments on HeatShield-lined flues because the manufacturer’s warranty doesn’t cover damage from non-recommended products.
- HeatShield failure at the smoke chamber, not the flue itself. The smoke chamber is the sloped area just above the firebox where smoke gathers before entering the flue. HeatShield makes a specific product for this area, but some contractors skip it because it’s harder to access. In Ventura homes with shallow fireboxes and steep smoke shelves, this area degrades faster than the flue. You’ll see smoke rolling back into the room on windy days. Our fix: full access to the smoke chamber using a camera and specialized trowels, then HeatShield’s chamber-specific application. This is often the fix, not a flue liner replacement.
Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means. That’s how we work on every HeatShield inspection.
Our HeatShield Chimney Inspection Process
Every HeatShield inspection in Ventura follows the same steps, whether we’re looking at a wood-burning fireplace on the Eastside, a prefab unit in a condo complex near the harbor, or a gas fireplace in an East Ventura track home. Here’s what you can expect from the moment you call.
- 1
Call and scheduling. A live person answers, day or night. We book a time that works for you, and we send the technician’s name and photo before the truck pulls up. Our tech shows a photo ID badge at the door, every time.
- 2
Arrival and walk-through. We start by asking what you’ve noticed: smoke in the room, odors, water stains, or just a seasonal inspection. We look at the firebox, damper, and visible masonry before we bring in the camera.
- 3
Camera inspection of the flue. We run a high-resolution camera through the full length of the flue, from the firebox to the top of the chimney. In a HeatShield system, we’re looking specifically for delamination, voids, thinning at offsets, and cracks where the sealant has pulled away from the tile. We record it all.
- 4
Written report with photos. You get a written report showing exactly what the camera saw. We walk you through each photo. If there’s a problem, we tell you whether it’s urgent or can safely wait. Nothing is recommended without camera evidence you can see for yourself.
- 5
Written price before any work starts. If repairs are needed, you get a written price as part of the report. There is no separate “quote visit” and no pressure call later. What you see is what it costs.
- 6
Repair, testing, and guarantee. If you approve the work, we use OEM HeatShield material or a specified compatible product, not a substitute. After application, we re-camera the flue to confirm coverage, then perform a draft test. Every repair carries a written guarantee. If it fails within the coverage period, the second visit is free.

AfterWhat HeatShield Chimney Inspection Costs in Ventura
HeatShield inspection pricing is straightforward. A Level 1 visual inspection with a basic flue check runs $189 – $250. A Level 2 camera inspection, which is what we recommend for any HeatShield system that has been in place more than three years, runs $290 – $450 depending on chimney height and access. If you’re buying or selling a home in Ventura, the real estate inspection is the Level 2 camera inspection, and we include the full written report with photos.
Repairs are priced separately, but here are real ranges we quote in Ventura: spot resealing of a small delamination area runs $350 – $650. Full flue reapplication with HeatShield material typically runs $2,800 – $5,500 depending on flue length and condition. Smoke chamber resurfacing runs $900 – $1,800. The two factors that move the price most are chimney height (roof access cost) and whether the existing HeatShield needs partial or full removal before reapplication. Nothing is ever recommended without camera evidence, and every repair gets a written quote before work begins. Call (559) 282-2695 for a free estimate on your specific chimney.

Why Ventura Homeowners Call Alcott Chimney Ventura for HeatShield Work
Most chimney companies can sweep a flue. Few understand what happens inside a HeatShield-lined chimney after years of Ventura’s coastal air, fog, and occasional hard rain. We’ve been working on these systems since 2002, and Ruben Castellano has spent the better part of two decades learning exactly how they fail and what fixes actually last. When a HeatShield repair fails, it’s usually because the original problem was never addressed, not because the product is bad. We fix the problem first, then restore the surface.
You’ll know exactly who is coming to your door. Our technicians are background-checked, identity-verified, uniformed, and announced by name and photo before arrival. That’s the Threshold Standard, and it’s not optional. We also work with the full range of professional materials: HeatShield, DuraFlex liner systems, and Gelco sealants. That matters because some flues need more than resurfacing. If your HeatShield has failed beyond repair, we’ll tell you plainly and give you the DuraFlex liner option instead of pushing another coat of sealant over a failing structure. Every job, repair or inspection, includes a written price before work starts and a written guarantee on the work we do. If it fails, the second visit is free. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s been how we operate in Ventura for years.
FAQs
No. An independent inspection by a qualified chimney professional does not void a HeatShield warranty. What voids the warranty is using chemical creosote treatments not approved by the manufacturer, or letting an unqualified person do repairs using the wrong materials. We document everything with camera footage, which actually helps your warranty case if a manufacturing defect is found. We are an independent HeatShield service provider, which means we can tell you honestly what’s covered and what isn’t without being pressured to sell you a replacement. Call (559) 282-2695 to schedule an inspection with full documentation.
The only honest answer is a camera inspection, and in Ventura we recommend it every three to five years for any HeatShield system. Symptoms that suggest trouble include ceramic grit in the firebox, a hollow or flaky spot when tapping the flue, or smoke that lingers in the room when the damper is open. None of those symptoms tells you the full story. A camera shows exactly where the bond is failing and whether it’s a $400 spot repair or a $4,000 reapplication. We never recommend work without showing you the footage. Call (559) 282-2695 and we’ll bring the camera.
We repair HeatShield whenever the damage is localized. Small delamination spots, thinning at flue tile offsets, and smoke chamber degradation are all repairable with HeatShield material, and we do these repairs regularly in Ventura. Full replacement is only necessary when the bond has failed across most of the flue surface or when the underlying masonry is too far gone to support a new application. The camera tells us which situation you have. We never recommend full replacement without showing you the footage and explaining why a spot repair wouldn’t hold. Call (559) 282-2695 for an inspection and an honest answer.
A standard camera inspection takes about 60 to 90 minutes from arrival to written report. We clean up after ourselves, and we leave you with a photo report you can keep. If repairs are approved, most spot repairs are done the same day. Full reapplications take one to two days depending on flue size and weather, and we schedule those around Ventura’s dry season when possible. Call (559) 282-2695 to check availability for your chimney.
Yes, and those are a lot of our calls. Older homes near the San Buenaventura Mission and throughout the Eastside often have original masonry chimneys that were resurfaced with HeatShield years ago, now showing their age. We know how those chimneys were built, how the flue tiles line up, and where water gets in. We also service newer HeatShield installations in track homes across East Ventura and condo units near the harbor. Call (559) 282-2695 and you’ll get a straight answer about your specific chimney.
