Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
We stock and install HeatShield-compatible chimney caps throughout Ventura, with most installations running $285 to $520 including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. If your existing cap is rusted through, missing, or letting rain straight down the flue, we can usually have the replacement on site within the same week, often sooner. Most Ventura homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a wet patch near the fireplace, a drip sound during January rains, or a cap that simply isn’t there anymore after a Santa Ana wind event.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield chimney caps are sized by flue tile dimensions, not by the brand of the fireplace below. The standard residential versions fit 8″x8″, 8″x12″, 12″x12″, and 13″x13″ clay flue tiles, with round variants for 6″, 7″, and 8″ stainless liners. If you’re unsure what you have, the quickest check is to measure the outside edge of the top flue tile with a tape measure from the roof or have us verify it during a visit. One HeatShield-specific gotcha in Ventura: caps installed on older homes near the San Buenaventura Mission district often sit on flues that were built slightly out of square. A cap sized for a nominal 12″x12″ tile can bind on a flue that’s actually 11¾” on one side. We shim and level those rather than forcing them, because a cocked cap sheds rain unevenly and shortens its lifespan by years.
We install genuine HeatShield caps when the original part is still in production. When it’s a discontinued size, we match it with a Copperfield or Gelco equivalent that duplicates the original’s coverage dimensions and wind rating. We’re an independent Ventura-based service provider, not a HeatShield factory warranty station, so we’re free to recommend the cap that actually fits your flue and your budget rather than whatever a brand catalog pushes.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water inside the firebox after rain. The cap’s hood has rusted or a weld has separated, letting rain fall straight down the flue. On Eastside Ventura homes with clay-lined chimneys, this water soaks into the tile and eventually stains the ceiling below.
- Rust streaks below the cap. The cap’s mounting collar is corroding. This is common within 5 to 8 years in coastal air because Ventura’s morning marine layer leaves a salt film on rooftop metal that accelerates rust.
- Birds or nesting material in the flue. The cap’s side mesh has torn or the screen was blown off. Once a starling gets in, the nest becomes a fire hazard the next time you light a fire.
- Cap wobbles or has shifted off-center. The mounting bolts have loosened or the cap’s base is warped. A cap sitting off-center lets wind-driven rain enter on the leeward side.
- Loud rattling or whistle on windy nights. A loose damper plate or a fatigued hinge inside the cap. More than an annoyance, the vibration loosens fasteners and turns a small fix into a roof call a season later.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Ventura homeowners, a HeatShield chimney cap replacement typically lands between $285 and $520 installed. The range breaks down simply: a standard single-flue cap for an 8″x8″ or 8″x12″ tile runs $285 to $390 with labor, while larger multi-flue or custom-fit caps run $420 to $520. What pushes a job toward the top of the range is roof access complexity, a flue that needs leveling shims, or a mounting collar that has to be custom-formed because the original tile is chipped.
Every quote includes the cap, stainless hardware, old cap removal, flue-top inspection while we’re up there, and a written price before we touch anything. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap shifts, leaks, or loosens within a year, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s not a sales line. It’s the same guarantee we’ve put in writing on every repair since 2002.
DIY or Call Us?
A chimney cap swap means working on a pitched roof, often two stories up, while drilling into masonry a few inches from the edge. The risk of a fall is real, and Ventura’s curved Spanish tile roofs are slicker than they look even when dry. There’s also a compatibility failure we see often enough to mention: DIYers buy a cap sized for their flue’s nominal dimension, then find the actual opening is a half-inch off and the cap won’t seat. Now they’ve spent $140 on a part they can’t return because it’s scuffed from wrestling it into place.
What you can safely do from the ground is check whether the cap is visibly missing, tilted, or covered in rust stains. That’s the information to bring to a pro. If you’re seeing water or hearing wind noise and want to know whether the cap is the culprit, call us at (559) 282-2695. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
FAQs
Expect 8 to 12 years in Ventura’s coastal climate. The salt-heavy morning marine layer cuts about 3 to 5 years off the lifespan compared to inland installations. Caps on homes within a mile of the ocean typically show rust in the mounting bolts by year 6, even when the hood itself still looks solid. If yours is past the 10-year mark and you’re starting to see rust streaks, budget for a replacement before the next rainy season rather than after the first interior stain. Call (559) 282-2695 for an exact quote, and we’ll measure what’s actually on your roof.
Usually not in a way that lasts. Rusted hoods can’t be un-rusted, and welding a new section onto a corroded base just moves the failure point to the weld. The exception is a loose or bent damper hinge, which we can sometimes re-tension on site for about a third of the cost of a new cap. Our rule is simple: if the metal still holds a screw and the rust is superficial, we’ll say so. If it’s crumbling when tapped, we’ll show you the photo and recommend replacement. Call (559) 282-2695 and we’ll give you a straight read on which path yours falls into.
Plan for 45 to 90 minutes on site, with most Ventura jobs finishing in under an hour. The replacement itself is quick; what adds time is flue-top inspection, addressing any chipped tile around the mounting area, and cleaning the crown surface so the new cap seats properly. You don’t need to be home for the roof work, but we’ll show you before-and-after photos when we come down. Call (559) 282-2695 to schedule, and we’ll give you a written price before we start.
We keep several common HeatShield and HeatShield-compatible sizes in our Ventura service vehicle: 8″x8″, 8″x12″, and 12″x12″ single-flue caps, along with round 6″ and 7″ liner caps. Larger and multi-flue sizes are sourced from our local supplier, usually within 1 to 3 business days. We also carry Copperfield and Gelco equivalents for discontinued HeatShield sizes, plus DuraFlex liner components when the cap replacement reveals a liner that needs attention too. Call (559) 282-2695 with your flue measurement and we’ll tell you on the spot whether we already have it on the truck.
