Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
Most DuraFlex chimney caps we install in Ventura run between $340 and $680 fully installed, depending on cap size and whether the flue tile needs a repair collar. We keep the common DuraFlex-compatible cap sizes and collar adapters on our trucks, so most swaps happen in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover the cap has failed when they notice water staining on the ceiling near the chimney chase, or when birds start making noise inside the flue in spring.

The cap is the single most exposed component on your chimney system. In Ventura, the combination of salt air off the Pacific and intense September heat takes a toll on aluminum and galvanized caps within five to seven years. We rarely see a steel cap survive a decade out here unless it was stainless from day one. The good news: this is one of the cheapest, fastest parts to replace on the entire system, and a properly installed cap prevents most of the expensive rebuilds people call us about.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex liner systems come in three common diameters for residential use: 5.5-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch. The cap you need depends on the liner size, not the tile size around it. We regularly see Ventura homeowners order a cap based on the outer flue tile measurement and get the wrong part. The liner is the flexible metal tube inside the chimney; the cap mounts to its termination collar, so you match to that inner diameter.
DuraFlex caps are built to fit their smooth-wall and double-wall liner systems specifically. A genuine DuraFlex termination cap comes with a draw band that seats against the liner’s top collar, and it includes a spark arrestor screen as a welded component, not a bolt-on afterthought. If your liner was installed before about 2012, it may be the older DuraFlex AL or 316L series, and you’ll want to confirm the cap’s OD tolerance before ordering. The current-generation caps handle both old and new liners in most cases, but a quick photo of the top termination sent to our office solves the guesswork in about a minute. We are an independent service provider and not affiliated with DuraFlex directly, which means we can install either the OEM cap or a quality aftermarket equivalent when it makes sense for your budget.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. A cracked cap weld or missing draw band lets rainwater run inside the chase and seep into framing. By the time you see ceiling paint bubbling, water has been coming in for at least one season.
- Debris inside the firebox that you didn’t put there. Look for nest material, seeds, or small twigs. A cap with a degraded spark arrestor screen is an open front door for birds, rats, and squirrels. In Ventura, spring and fall are when we get the most “there’s an animal in my chimney” calls.
- Visible rust streaks running down the cap or liner. Galvanized caps fail from salt exposure first. Once the zinc layer goes, the steel underneath degrades fast. Stainless lasts longer, but even a 316L cap can pit after eight to ten years within a few miles of the coast.
- You hear wind noise or a whistling sound at the fireplace in high wind. This often means the cap’s windscreen or baffle has warped, or the draw band loosened enough that air cuts across the collar. It’s not dangerous, but it is the first warning sign that the assembly is working itself loose.
- The cap sits off-center or looks tilted from the ground. Shifted caps usually mean the draw band clamps stretched, or the crown surface it sits on is crumbling. A tilted cap will grind against the liner under Santa Ana winds and wear through quickly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what DuraFlex-specific cap replacement runs in Ventura, based on what we’ve installed this year:
- Standard cap swap, 5.5-inch or 6-inch liner, single story: $340 to $480 installed.
- Larger or specialty cap, 8-inch liner or high-wind model: $480 to $620 installed.
- Cap plus repair collar or flue tile extension: Add $120 to $200.
- Full cap and chase cover replacement: $650 to $850 installed.
What drives the range is roof access and what we find at the top. A two-story home in the Eastside neighborhood near the San Buenaventura Mission with a steep pitch costs more in labor than a single-story ranch in Montalvo. A crumbling flue tile needs a repair collar before the cap can seat properly. Every quote comes as a written price before any work starts, so you know the number before we break out the ladder. The installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap fails due to our workmanship within a year, the second visit and repair are free.
DIY or Call Us?
A chimney cap swap is not a high-danger repair like spring replacement, but it does put you on a roof with a drill, a draw band, and a measured set of tolerances. What you can safely check from the ground: can you see the cap, does it look level, is there visible rust. If you’re comfortable on a ladder and the roof is walkable, you can take photos of the top and liner measurement for us. Where DIY goes wrong: using the wrong cap diameter, cranking the draw band too hard and deforming the liner, or walking away from a loose clamp that sails the cap off in the first good wind. FAQs
Most DuraFlex caps last 7 to 10 years in Ventura’s climate, with stainless models on the longer end and galvanized on the shorter end due to salt air and intense sun exposure. Coastal homes within three miles of the ocean often see galvanized cap failure in five to six years. Regular inspection catches pitting before water entry. Call us at (559) 282-2695 if you want a cap health check during your next sweep.
Sometimes, yes. Small spark arrestor tears can be wire-brushed and patched, and loose draw bands can be retorqued. But once the cap body shows through-rust or a cracked weld, welding a paper-thin galvanized shell is throwing money away. We’ll tell you which path makes sense after we put eyes on it, and the quote is free.
Most swaps take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on the roof, including breaking down the old cap and confirming the liner’s condition at the top. If we need a repair collar for a damaged flue tile, it adds another 30 minutes. You’ll have the written price before the first tool comes off the truck.
Yes. We keep common DuraFlex-compatible cap sizes and collar adapters on our trucks, along with parts for HeatShield and Gelco systems. In most cases, we can complete the installation the same day we diagnose it. If your liner is an unusual size, we order it and return within a few days.
