Famco Crown Repair: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
A Famco crown repair in Ventura typically costs between $275 and $650 installed, depending on how much of the existing crown is salvageable and which Famco product line you own. We stock Famco-compatible crown materials on our trucks and can usually complete the full repair in a single visit, often the same week you call. Most homeowners find out their crown has failed the hard way: a rust-colored stain on the stucco, water beading on the damper, or a flake of mortar in the firebox after a Santa Ana wind blows through. The crown is the concrete or metal cap at the top of your chimney, and when a Famco crown starts to fail, water gets where it shouldn’t, and the damage compounds quietly until someone spots it.

Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco’s crown designs fall into two broad lines: their galvanized steel crowns and their stainless steel crowns. Galvanized models typically appear on their vented gas and wood-burning chimney systems, while the stainless crowns ship with their high-wind and direct-vent products. The compatibility gotcha every Ventura homeowner should know: a Famco stainless crown will not pair with a galvanized flue section without a dielectric fitting, because the two metals will electrolytically corrode where they touch in our coastal air. That’s the kind of detail that matters in a salt-fog environment like Ventura.
If you’re not sure what you have, look for the embossed model number on the underside of the crown or on the chimney section itself, usually within 12 inches of the top. The numbers will tell us the diameter and the series. For most Famco residential systems, the crown comes in standard opening sizes from 6 to 10 inches in half-inch increments, and the bolt pattern is the same across the same series, so an OEM replacement or a quality aftermarket equivalent will mount correctly. We install genuine Famco where the model is still in production, and we keep a shelf of equivalent aftermarket crowns from the brands we carry, including DuraFlex and Olympia Chimney, for discontinued Famco lines.

Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the chimney or stucco. This is almost always a galvanized crown that has lost its coating. The steel underneath oxidizes, and rain carries the rust down the masonry, leaving those telltale orange trails.
- Water in the firebox after a rain. If the crown isn’t shedding water, rain runs down the flue liner and pools where it shouldn’t. You might see a water line, damp ash, or even a small puddle.
- Efflorescence, which is the white powdery salt deposit, on the chimney exterior. Water is moving through the masonry itself, picking up soluble salts, and leaving them behind when it evaporates. It’s a sign the crown has been letting water in long enough to saturate the structure.
- A cracked or lifted crown you can see from the ground with binoculars. Send a photo, or better yet, have us inspect it. A crack that starts as a hairline will widen with thermal cycling, and Ventura’s warm days and cool nights do that all year.
- Draft problems that appear only when it’s windy. A damaged crown can alter the pressure around the chimney top, which disrupts the draft. If your fireplace smokes on windy days, the crown is one of the first things we check.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest price picture for a Famco crown repair in Ventura:
- Reseal existing sound crown: $275 – $400. This covers inspection, crack routing, and application of a professional crown sealer or elastomeric coating. It’s the right call when the crown is structurally intact but developing small cracks.
- Partial rebuild or patch with matching material: $400 – $550. We remove the damaged section, form it, and bond the new material. This works for crowns with one localized failure area.
- Full crown replacement with Famco-compatible material: $550 – $650. We remove the old crown, inspect the top courses of the flue and the chase, and install a new crown at the correct taper and drip edge so water sheds away from the masonry.
The price you’re quoted is the price you pay, and that quote is written before we touch anything. That’s our standard and it’s never negotiable. Every Famco crown repair includes a written guarantee: if it fails within the coverage period, we come back and fix it at no charge. The repair is backed for a full year under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

If your crown has an obvious crack and you want to understand what you’re looking at, a slow visual inspection from the ground or from a safely placed ladder is fine. But crown repair is not a weekend project, and I’ll tell you why. A crown that’s already failed means water has been getting in, and what looks like a superficial crack on the surface is often the visible end of deeper structural damage around the flue. We see it all over Ventura, especially on the older chimneys in the historic Eastside near the San Buenaventura Mission: a homeowner caulks the crack, and twelve months later we’re back because moisture worked its way under the patch and the freeze-thaw cycle popped it loose. Climbing a roof and working on a chimney crown is also genuinely dangerous work, with a drop on one side and a flue on the other. We’ve got the harnesses, the training, and the specific materials. If you’re seeing rust, water, or flaking crown material, call us at (559) 282-2695 and we’ll give you a real assessment and a written price.
FAQs
A properly installed Famco crown lasts 15 to 25 years in Ventura’s climate, though coastal properties within a mile or so of the water often see shorter lifespans because salt fog accelerates corrosion on galvanized metal. An annual chimney inspection will catch surface cracking early, when resealing costs far less than replacement. Call (559) 282-2695 and we’ll tell you honestly whether yours can wait another season.
Yes, if the crown is structurally sound and the cracking is limited to the surface, we can repair it by routing and sealing the cracks; if the crack runs through the crown or the material is delaminating, patching won’t hold and replacement is the only honest fix. We’ll show you photos and explain exactly what we’re seeing before you spend a dollar.
Most crown repairs and full replacements are completed in a single visit of two to four hours, including setup, removal, installation, and cleanup. We book by the job, not the hour, so the time is ours to manage. Call (559) 282-2695 for scheduling.
We keep common Famco sizes and our equivalent aftermarket brands on the truck, but if your specific series requires an ordered part, we’ll tell you before we schedule and give you a firm date. We’d rather wait a few days for the right part than install something close-but-not-quite. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
