Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Damper Repair: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
If you have a Famco damper that’s stuck open, seized shut, or rattling every time the coastal wind picks up, we can repair or replace it, usually within a week of your call. In Ventura, most Famco damper repairs run between $145 and $385 installed, depending on what actually failed – a replacement cable assembly sits at the low end, while a full damper frame swap on an older firebox lands at the top. You’ll most likely discover the problem on a chilly evening when smoke drifts back into the living room instead of up the flue, or when you reach for the handle and it won’t budge.

We’re Alcott Chimney Ventura, and we’ve been working on Famco dampers in Ventura homes long enough to know which parts fail first and which ones are worth saving. Ruben Castellano and our crew keep the most common Famco replacement components on the truck, so a lot of these repairs happen in a single visit.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco is an independent manufacturer – we’re not affiliated with them, but we install and service their dampers regularly because they’re solid, repairable hardware. The company makes a few distinct lines, and the part you need depends on which one you have. The most common in Ventura homes are the Famco Top-Sealing Damper (the round or oval one mounted at the top of the flue, operated by a cable or chain that drops down into the firebox) and the Famco Throat Damper (the traditional cast-iron or steel plate just above the firebox, usually lever-operated). There’s also the Famco Multi-Flue version for chimneys serving more than one flue tile.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people run into: top-sealing and throat dampers do not share parts. A cable assembly from a Famco top-sealer won’t fit a throat damper, and the mounting brackets are entirely different. If you’re ordering something yourself, look for the model stamp on the damper frame or on the handle mechanism. Older Famco throat dampers often have a small metal tag riveted to the frame. No tag? Take a photo of the damper from inside the firebox and measure the opening width across the front edge, the full depth, and the distance from the firebox floor to the damper shelf. We match replacements by those measurements, not by guesswork.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for cables and pulleys, we prefer genuine Famco parts because the fit matters and the cost difference is usually under $20. For damper frames on older fireplaces, a properly sized universal replacement from a trade brand like Copperfield often fits better than trying to force a Famco-specific frame into a firebox that’s shifted over 40 years of California earthquakes. We’ll tell you which makes sense before any work starts.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle or cable moves but the damper plate doesn’t. This usually means the cable has slipped out of its anchor bracket or snapped inside the conduit. We see this a lot on top-sealers in Ventura’s older Eastside neighborhoods, where decades of salt air have worked on the hardware.
- Smoke comes back into the room with the damper open. That’s often a damper plate that’s misaligned or a frame that’s warped, leaving a gap around the edges. Even a quarter-inch gap changes the draft dramatically.
- The damper is frozen in one position. Creosote buildup acts like glue on older throat dampers, and rust from coastal moisture seizes the pivot pins. A little penetrating oil sometimes frees a minor bind, but a seized frame usually needs replacement.
- You hear a metallic rattle when the wind blows. On top-sealing dampers, that’s often a loose cable or a plate seal that’s torn and flapping. Left alone, the cable can fray and snap mid-season.
- Cold air drops into the living room when the fireplace isn’t in use. That’s the damper not seating fully. On a Famco top-sealer, it’s usually the gasket or the spring mechanism that’s worn out, which also means you’re losing heat up the chimney all night.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what you’re looking at in Ventura right now. A cable replacement or handle repair on a Famco damper typically runs $145 to $260, parts and labor included. A full damper frame replacement runs $260 to $385, depending on the firebox size and whether we need to modify the mounting surface. If the damper is integrated with a top-sealing cap, the cap itself adds roughly $120 to $180 if it also needs replacing – but we won’t recommend that unless the existing cap is cracked or rusted through.
Every quote is a written price delivered before we start, so there’s no surprise line item at the end. The price includes the part, installation, a fitment check, and a draft test after the repair. And because this is Alcott Chimney Ventura, the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: a written guarantee on every repair, and if the repair fails within a year, the second visit is free. That’s not a premium option. It’s just how we work.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the handle operation, listen for rattles, and visually inspect the damper from inside the firebox with a flashlight. If the cable looks frayed or the plate is visibly warped, you’ve found the problem. But replacing a Famco damper cable or frame means working inside the firebox or on the chimney crown, and that’s where DIY goes sideways. A top-sealing damper means working at height with proper ladder rigging. A throat damper replacement means cutting out a cast-iron frame that may be cemented in place – and getting the new one slightly out of square means smoke in the house and a callback from an unhappy draft. We carry the right parts, the right tools, and enough experience with Famco hardware to get it done without turning a $200 fix into a $900 firebox repair. If you’ve read this far and you’re still unsure what you’re looking at, call (559) 282-2695 and talk it through. Ruben’s phrase around the shop still works: tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
FAQs
In coastal Ventura air, a Famco throat damper typically lasts 15 to 25 years before the frame or pivot hardware needs real work. Top-sealing damper cables and gaskets usually need replacement every 8 to 12 years because salt air and heat cycles wear the gasket material and corrode the cable hardware faster than inland. We also stock parts for DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco systems, so if your damper issues are tied to a liner problem, we can address both in one visit. Call (559) 282-2695 for an exact quote on your setup.
Often yes. A stuck cable, a loose handle set screw, a torn gasket, or a misaligned plate can frequently be repaired with a replacement component, and that’s always our first recommendation when the frame itself is still square. If the cast frame is cracked, warped, or corroded through, replacement is the only honest option. We’ll show you the problem before we quote the fix.
Most Famco damper repairs – cable swaps, handle repairs, gasket replacements – take between 45 minutes and 2 hours on site. A full frame replacement usually runs 2 to 3 hours because the old frame has to be cut out, the mounting surface cleaned, and the new damper fit and tested. We’ll give you a time window before we arrive, and you’ll know the technician’s name and see their photo before we pull up.
We carry the most common Famco cables, handle assemblies, gaskets, and mounting brackets on our service vehicles, which means a lot of repairs are done in one visit. Oversized or unusual firebox dimensions may need an ordered frame, which typically arrives in 3 to 5 business days. Call (559) 282-2695 and we’ll tell you what’s likely based on your model.
