Gelco Chimney Inspection in Ventura: What to Know First
We inspect Gelco chimney components in Ventura homes for $189 – $349 depending on the level of inspection your situation calls for, and most inspections are completed within 90 minutes. That price includes a written report with photos and, if you need a repair, the inspection fee is credited toward the work. As an independent Gelco service provider, we’re not tied to the manufacturer’s warranty department, which means we tell you what’s actually wrong and what it will cost to fix without routing through a corporate approval process.

This page is for Ventura homeowners who have a Gelco chimney cap, damper, chase cover, or related component and want a straight answer about whether it’s safe, what’s wearing out, and what it costs to address. If you’re not sure whether your chimney even has Gelco parts, that’s fine too. Call (559) 282-2695 and Ruben or one of our techs will walk you through what to look for before we ever schedule a visit.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Gelco makes a range of chimney components, but in Ventura we see a handful of recurring issues tied to our coastal climate. Here’s what we actually find on the roof and in the flue:
- Galvanized chase covers rusting at the corners. Gelco’s standard chase covers hold up reasonably well inland, but Ventura’s salt air accelerates corrosion at the fold seams and screw holes. We regularly see pinhole rust through the top surface within 8 – 12 years of installation. The fix is a replacement cover, and we recommend stainless over galvanized for anything within three miles of the coast. The price difference is usually $120 – $180, and it buys another decade of service life.
- Loose or cracked Gelco flue caps on older masonry chimneys. The cast collar on Gelco’s flue caps can shift when the mortar crown underneath begins to spall, which is common on Ventura’s older homes near the San Buenaventura Mission. A shifted cap lets rain and embers into the flue, and worse, it creates a gap where critters get in. We re-seat the cap, repair the crown if needed, and if the casting itself is cracked, we replace it with a current Gelco-compatible cap or a stainless equivalent.
- Damper linkage wear on Gelco top-mount dampers. The cable-and-pulley assembly on Gelco’s top-mount dampers stretches over time, so the damper doesn’t seal tight at the top. You’ll notice a draft even when the damper is “closed,” and your fire burns lazier than it should. We re-tension the cable, lubricate the linkage, and if the silicone seal ring has degraded, we replace that rather than the entire damper body. A full replacement is only necessary about one time in four.
- Chase pan leaks around the Gelco termination collar. When the chase pan’s welded seam or the silicone bead around the collar fails, water runs down inside the chimney chase and shows up as water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, or rust on the firebox floor. This is frequently misdiagnosed as a flashing problem by general roofers. We remove the old termination collar, inspect the chase pan for rust-through, and reset the collar with a mechanical seal that doesn’t depend on caulk.
- Animal entry through unguarded Gelco caps. Ventura’s raccoons and squirrels don’t need much of a gap. Gelco caps with bent or missing mesh screens are an open door for animals nesting in the flue, which creates both a fire hazard and a serious odor problem. During a Level 2 inspection, we camera the flue for nesting material and we’ll remove it safely, then re-mesh the cap or swap it if the frame is too far gone.

Our Gelco Chimney Inspection Process
Here’s exactly what happens when you call us for a Gelco chimney inspection in Ventura, from first call to final report:
- 1
Phone call with a live person. You describe what you’re seeing or what prompted the inspection, whether it’s a home sale, water stains, or an off smell. We tell you honestly whether we think you need a Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 inspection, and what each one costs before anyone gets in a truck.
- 2
You receive the tech’s name and photo. Before the appointment, we send you the name and photo of the technician who’s coming, along with a reminder that they’ll show a photo ID at the door. That’s the Threshold Standard, and we don’t skip it.
- 3
On-site walkthrough and exterior inspection. The tech examines the chase cover, cap, crown, flashing, and any visible Gelco components, then points out what they see, photographed, before they touch anything.
- 4
Flue camera inspection. We run a camera down the flue and record the full length. If we find cracks, gaps, creosote buildup, or signs of a previous chimney fire, you see the footage yourself, we don’t describe it from memory.
- 5
Written findings and repair options. If repairs are needed, we write out the scope, use genuine Gelco parts where they matter and quality aftermarket alternatives where the OEtM equivalent is overpriced or discontinued, and give you a written number before any work begins.
- 6
If you approve the repair, we do it and test it. We verify the damper opens and closes, the cap is secured, and the flue drafts properly. Then you get the written guarantee, which covers the repair for a full year.
What Gelco Chimney Inspection Costs in Ventura
Here are the price ranges we quote most often for Gelco-related inspections and the fixes that follow them:
| Service | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Level 1 inspection (no camera) | $189 – $249 |
| Level 2 inspection (with camera, home sale or system change) | $249 – $349 |
| Level 3 inspection (requires opening a wall or chase) | Quote after Level 2 findings |
| Gelco chase cover replacement (galvanized) | $420 – $610 |
| Gelco chase cover replacement (stainless) | $540 – $790 |
| Top-mount damper re-tension and seal replacement | $180 – $290 |
| Full top-mount damper replacement | $460 – $720 |
What moves the price: roof pitch and height (a steep two-story in the Ventura foothills costs more to work on safely), whether the flue has multiple offsets that require more camera time, and whether we find damage that forces a Level 3 inspection. The inspection fee is applied as a credit toward any repair you approve. Call (559) 282-2695 for an exact quote, and the estimate is free.

AfterWhy Ventura Homeowners Call Alcott Chimney Ventura for Gelco Work
A chimney inspection is only useful if you trust the person giving you the report. That’s where we’re different. Every technician we send to a Ventura home is background-checked and identity-verified under the Threshold Standard, and you’ll know their name and see their photo before they arrive. When they get to your door, they’ll show you a photo ID before they step inside. There’s no exception to that rule. Our pricing is written before any work starts, so there’s no “while we’re up there” discovery pricing at the end. We carry full replacement components for Gelco, and when a Gelco part fails or gets discontinued, we have direct experience with DuraFlex liner systems and HeatShield resurfacing as backstop options. Every repair we perform is covered by a written guarantee for 365 days; if a repair fails within that year, the second visit is free. Ruben Castellano started learning this trade in Los Angeles and he’s been straight with Ventura homeowners for over two decades now. Tell him what you’re seeing and he’ll tell you what it actually means.
FAQs
We’re an independent Gelco service provider, so we don’t file warranty claims on the manufacturer’s behalf, and we’re not authorized by Gelco. What we do instead is give you a written inspection report with photographic evidence that you can submit to Gelco yourself if a component is still under warranty, and our own repair work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise regardless of what the manufacturer’s warranty says.
If you’re not sure whether your Gelco part is still covered, call (559) 282-2695 and we’ll help you figure out the age of the component and whether a warranty claim makes sense.
If the rust is confined to the screw holes or a single seam and the metal still has a solid “ring” when tapped, we can sometimes wire-brush the affected area, patch it, and seal it properly. If there’s pinhole rust visible through the top surface or the seams have separated so water is getting inside the chase, replacement is the honest recommendation. In Ventura’s salt air, a patched galvanized cover usually fails again within two to three years. A stainless replacement costs more upfront but we’ve seen them last 15 years or more on beach-adjacent homes in the Midtown and Pierpont areas.
Most Level 2 camera inspections are scheduled within 5 – 7 business days of your call, and the inspection itself takes 60 – 90 minutes. If you’re selling a home and need an inspection on a short timeline for escrow, tell us when you call and we’ll do our best to fit you in sooner. The report with photos is delivered the same day.
Yes. Gelco has discontinued several product lines over the years, particularly older top-mount damper models and certain cap styles. When an exact Gelco replacement isn’t available, we fabricate a compatible stainless component through our local metal supplier or we use a current production part that meets the same spec. We’ll always show you the discontinued part number and explain what we’re substituting and why it’s equal or better.
Raccoons can’t build a nest in the flue without a fire risk and an odor problem that seeps into the drywall. We remove the nesting material during a Level 2 inspection, evaluate whether the Gelco cap’s mesh or frame is still sound, and either re-mesh it or replace the cap with a current model. If the animal is still present, we refer you to a licensed wildlife removal service before we seal anything, and we’ll coordinate the timing so the animal is out before the cap goes back on.
