Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Olympia Chimney-compatible chimney caps throughout Ventura, with most installations running $245 to $410 including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. Same-week scheduling is typical for us in the Ventura area, and we carry common Olympia sizes on the truck. You’ll usually discover a cap failure one of two ways: you spot rust flakes or a missing section from the ground, or you hear rain spattering down the flue during the first real winter storm. Sometimes it’s a neighbor mentioning they saw your cap hanging off one side. Either way, the fix is straightforward when the right part goes on, and the wrong part is a waste of your money.

Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney makes caps across several lines, and we’ve installed on most of them around Ventura: the Olympia stainless steel caps for round flues, the single-flue and multi-flue versions, and their bolt-on round caps sized to fit standard clay tile liners. The compatibility gotcha is the inside diameter. Your flue tile’s outside dimension does not match the cap opening, and guessing gets you a cap that either wobbles or won’t seat at all. We measure the actual flue opening before ordering anything. For most Ventura homes built before 1990, that’s a 13″x13″ square tile, but plenty of mid-century chimneys out in the Eastside run 8″x12″ or other odd sizes that make the measurement non-negotiable. As for OEM vs aftermarket: Olympia’s caps are solid stainless and hold up well in coastal air, but there are quality aftermarket equivalents in the same 304 stainless that do the same job for less. We’ll show you both options and let you decide.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Visible rust staining on the flue or cap itself. Even stainless caps get surface corrosion near the ocean in Ventura. The salt air here accelerates oxidation on lower-grade alloys, and that rust migrates down onto your tile liner. You’ll see orange streaks after rain.
- Rain water inside the firebox. A failed cap or its mounting band lets water run straight down the flue. You’ll notice a damp, sooty smell in the living room or actual puddling at the firebox floor after a storm.
- Debris in the firebox. Leaves, twigs, or bird nesting material below the damper mean the cap’s mesh or the cap itself has opened a gap. Even a small gap invites birds and debris, which then dry and become a fire load.
- Loose or tilted cap visible from the ground. The mounting legs or tension bands on some Olympia caps work loose over time, especially through the temperature swings between Ventura’s cool marine mornings and hot inland afternoons. A tilted cap means adjacent sections of the cap are no longer seated, and the next Santa Ana wind is likely to finish the job.
- Drafting that’s suddenly worse. A damaged cap can partially block or redirect wind across the flue opening. If the fireplace smokes back into the room only on windy days, the cap is often a contributor. We check this on every inspection call in Ventura.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Olympia Chimney-compatible cap installations in Ventura run $245 to $410 fully installed. The range comes down to three things: the flue tile size and whether it’s a standard round tile or a custom size, whether you want the Olympia cap or a quality aftermarket equivalent, and the roof access difficulty. A single-story ranch with easy roof access will land at the lower end. A two-story home with a steep pitch and no safe ladder set will push toward the upper end. Either way, you get a written price before any work begins, and the installation is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap fails or the installation causes a leak within the year, we come back free and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Working on a chimney cap means being on a roof, and in Ventura that often means a damp, lichen-slick surface in the morning or a hot, dry one by afternoon. We don’t recommend it as a DIY job. You can safely do the ground-level checks: look up with binoculars, look inside the firebox for debris or water stains, and take a photo to send us. If the cap is within reach of a ladder, some homeowners do swap a simple round bolt-on cap, but the risk is getting the inside diameter wrong or not seating the fasteners correctly, which lands you the same problem you started with, only you’ve paid for the part twice. If you’d rather have it measured, matched, and mounted by someone who has done this on hundreds of Ventura roofs, call (559) 282-2695 for a quote.
FAQs
Quality stainless caps in Ventura usually last 12 to 18 years. Coastal salt air and strong sun both work on the metal, and we regularly see caps in the beach neighborhoods showing significant rust by year 15. The mounting hardware often fails first, not the cap itself.
Usually not. The mesh, legs, or band can sometimes be tightened or patched, but when a cap is rusted through or structurally loose, a repair just delays replacement by a season or two. We’ll show you the damage and tell you straight if a repair won’t hold. Call (559) 282-2695 if you want an estimate either way.
Most single-flue Olympia cap installations take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re set up. That includes measuring the flue, setting the cap, checking the fit, and sweeping up any loose debris from the roof area. Multi-flue or custom-size jobs can take longer.
We stock the most common Olympia-compatible round cap sizes on the truck, and we can get most other Olympia sizes within a few days. If you need a custom or odd-size cap, we’ll tell you upfront before any work is scheduled. We also install caps from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco when those are a better fit for your flue style.
