Olympia Chimney Crown Repair: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
An Olympia Chimney crown repair in Ventura typically runs $425 – $750 installed, and we complete most in one trip because we stock the standard Olympia crown sizes on our trucks. The crown is the concrete or metal cap that seals the top of your chimney where the flue tile pokes through, and when it fails, you’ll usually notice it first as water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace or crumbling bits of mortar on the roof after a good rain. In Ventura’s marine layer and winter storms, a cracked crown lets water into the chimney chase, and on Olympia units that water works down into the galvanized chase top and anchor plate before you ever see it inside the house.

We’re an independent chimney service, not an Olympia Chimney dealer or affiliate, but we install and stock Olympia-compatible crown components because half the prefab chimneys in the older Eastside neighborhoods and the Midtown tracts are Olympia units. Ruben Castellano grew up in Los Angeles and learned the trade at LA Trade-Technical College, and he’ll be the first to tell you that most crown failures on Olympia chimneys aren’t the crown itself. It’s what the crown sits on. So before we quote a crown repair, we check the chase top, the anchor plate, and the flue tile alignment. If those are sound, the crown is a straightforward fix. If they’re not, we’ll tell you that too, with a written price before any work starts.
Key takeaways:
- Typical installed Olympia crown repair in Ventura: $425 – $750
- We stock standard Olympia crown sizes on the truck; most jobs done in one visit
- Written price before work begins, written guarantee on every repair
- 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, the second visit is free
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney made a bunch of prefab fireplace and chimney systems over the years, and the crown part number depends on which series you have. The most common in Ventura are the Olympia 3000 series and the Olympia 4000 series, plus a number of older Olympic-branded units that were sold under the Olympia name before the company consolidated its line. The crown for a 3000-series unit is not interchangeable with a 4000-series crown. The flue tile diameter is different, the anchor plate spacing is different, and the crown’s drip edge profile is different. If you have the original manual or the model tag still on the fireplace face, the series number is usually printed there. No manual? We can identify the unit from the chase top dimensions and flue tile outside diameter, which we measure on site.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Olympia still manufactures crowns for most of its legacy product lines, and those OEM crowns are what we prefer when the unit is still under any kind of warranty. For older units where the OEM crown is discontinued or backordered for months, we use a quality aftermarket equivalent fabricated to the exact same outside dimensions, bolt pattern, and drip edge clearance. The aftermarket crowns we install are built from 24-gauge galvanized or stainless steel depending on the coastal exposure, and we specify the same materials Olympia used on the original. One compatibility gotcha specific to Olympia: the crown’s center hole is sized to the flue tile’s outside dimension, not the inside. A lot of DIY crown replacements order by the flue’s inside diameter and get a crown that sits wrong and leaks at the base. That’s the single most common ordering mistake we see on Olympia units.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall around the fireplace. This is the symptom that finally gets people to call. By the time water shows up inside, the crown has usually been compromised for a season or more, and the water has worked down through the chase and into the framing. The crown is rarely the only fix at that point, so we inspect the whole chase path.
- Crumbling mortar or concrete on the roof near the chimney. On masonry Olympia chases with poured concrete crowns, the crown is the sacrificial part. Years of freeze-thaw cycles, even in Ventura’s mild climate, crack the concrete. You’ll see small pieces of aggregate and cement on the shingles or in the gutter below the chimney.
- Rust staining around the flue tile or chase top. On metal factory-built Olympia units, the crown is galvanized steel, and rust at the seams or around the flue penetration means the galvanic coating is gone. Once that starts, the crown will continue to corrode, and the rust will eventually transfer to the flue pipe itself.
- A loose or wobbling flue tile. The crown’s other job is to hold the flue tile in alignment with the chimney below. If you can see the tile shift when you push on it from the roof, the crown’s grip is gone and the tile is now shaking against the storm collar every time the wind blows. Ventura’s Santa Ana winds are hard on this exact failure point.
- Debris or nesting material inside the flue. A cracked crown with a gap at the flue perimeter is an open door for birds, squirrels, and roof rats. If your sweep pulls nesting material out of the flue, the crown is the usual entry point, and it needs to be sealed or replaced before the next nesting season.

In Ventura, an Olympia chimney crown repair runs $425 – $750 installed for most single-flue residential units. The spread depends on three things: whether you have a poured concrete crown on a masonry chase or a metal crown on a factory-built unit, whether the flue tile is single-wall or double-wall, and whether the chase top or anchor plate needs patching while we’re up there. About a third of the crowns we inspect need some secondary metal work, which is why we don’t quote a crown repair over the phone without seeing the unit. We’ll measure it, look at what the crown sits on, and hand you a written price before any work begins.
Every crown repair we do includes removal of the failed crown, inspection and surface prep of the chase top or masonry crown base, installation of the new OEM or equivalent crown, mechanical fastening per Olympia’s original spec, and sealing at the flue and chase seams with a high-temperature exterior sealant rated for coastal exposure. The repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s not a sales pitch. It’s the same guarantee we’ve put on every repair since Alcott Chimney Sweep started serving Ventura in 2002.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the diagnostic part yourself. From the ground or a stable ladder, look at the crown with binoculars: is the metal rusted through at the seams? Is the concrete cracked or missing chunks? Is the flue tile straight and solid? That tells you whether you have a problem. You don’t need to get on the roof to know that much. What you shouldn’t do is climb up and try to patch a galvanized steel crown with roofing tar or caulk. It won’t hold against the thermal cycling of the chimney, and a loose flue tile or rusted chase top is not something to stand next to and improvise. The crown sits at the very top of a structure that’s been taking coastal weather for a long time. That’s a place for a trained chimney tech with fall protection and the right parts on the truck. Call us at (559) 282-2695 and tell us what you’re seeing. Ruben will tell you what it actually means and what it costs to fix it right.
FAQs
A properly installed Olympia chimney crown, whether metal or poured concrete, lasts 15 to 25 years in Ventura’s coastal climate. Metal crowns on factory-built units tend to fail at the seams first, usually between years 12 and 18. Concrete crowns on masonry chases fail from moisture intrusion and thermal cracking, usually between years 15 and 25. If a crown fails before year 10, it was either installed wrong, fabricated from the wrong material, or the chase below it shifted. We’ll tell you which one it looks like when we inspect it. For an exact quote on your unit, call (559) 282-2695.
Sometimes. If the crown has a hairline crack in a concrete pour with no missing material and no rust, a high-quality exterior crack filler and a crown seal coating can buy you another five to eight years. If the crown is rusted through at any seam, or if concrete chunks are missing, patching is just delaying the replacement. The difference matters less than knowing which one you have. That’s what our inspection determines, with photos you can see before you approve anything. Call (559) 282-2695 to schedule a crown assessment.
Most Olympia crown replacements take two to three hours from setup to cleanup, and we complete the majority in one visit because we stock the standard 3000-series and 4000-series crowns on our service trucks. If your unit has a custom flue configuration or the chase top needs fabrication work, we’ll schedule a follow-up once the parts are ready. You’ll have the plan in writing before we climb up. Call (559) 282-2695 with your model number and we’ll let you know if your crown is one we carry on the truck.
We stock the most common Olympia crown sizes on our trucks and can typically replace a standard crown the same day we inspect it. For less common series or stainless steel coastal versions, we order direct from our Olympia distribution channel and typically have the part within a week. Alongside Olympia, we also carry and install DuraFlex liner systems, HeatShield resurfacing, and Gelco products, so if the crown failure has caused secondary damage below it, we can address the full repair without bringing in another company. Call (559) 282-2695 and we’ll check inventory for your specific Olympia model while you’re on the phone.
